CHAPTER TWO - MORNING THOUGHTS
The phone rang, shattering Lance out of a restless sleep. He picked it up to hear a mechanical voice informing him it was time to get up. He hung the phone back up, and lay in bed, staring at the ceiling. He was in no hurry to get up this morning.
After crying for what seemed like hours the previous night, he had collapsed into bed, hoping for a reprieve from his thoughts. But he had no luck. He tossed and turned, and every time he closed his eyes, a picture of JC would flash in his mind. He finally fell asleep, but his dreams were troubled, causing him to be unnaturally tired this morning.
He groaned and sat up in the bed. Wiping a hand along his face, he attempted to wipe away not only the sleep, but also the thoughts of JC that invaded his mind as soon as he awoke. He really had to snap out of it. This was not the time to be falling in love. He had to spend way too much time around him, around the probing eyes of the others, to let his feelings come out. Feelings he didn't even acknowledge until the night before.
He stood, walking over to the bathroom, yet dreading to go in. This was the place where all the problems started. If he could have just gone to bed last night instead of taking that shower, maybe things would be better.
Yeah right, he told himself. Like I can blame this on the shower. Oh yeah, the running water made me gay. Sure, that justifies the situation.
He sighed as he looked in the mirror above the sink. His reflection stared back at him, not able to help him at all. In fact, it kind of made him feel worse. His green eyes were dull, and there were bags under them so big, he could pack a weeks worth of clothes into them. His hair was lank against his scalp, and his skin was unnaturally pale, even for him. He exhaled his breath and his mouth just went back into the frown that was there before.
Lance turned the tap water on and cupped his hands, splashing his face with cold water. His heart momentarily skipped at the shock, but when he did it a second time, his body was ready for it. He rubbed his face, washing the sleep off of it, and tried to get some color into his pallor complexion. He stuck his head under the faucet, effectively wetting his hair.
As he stepped out of the bathroom, he rubbed a towel over his head, getting the excess moisture out. He hung the white hotel towel around his neck as he sat on the edge of the bed and reached for the phone. He called room service and ordered breakfast for the guys. Sometimes he hated being the morning person. He always had the responsibility of breakfast. If it was left to one of the other guys, it would be disastrous. They left Justin in charge of it one morning, and they all ended up eating Apple Jacks. But, no matter what he did, what he ordered, someone always wanted something that he forgot.
Lance debated calling the guys' rooms to see if they were up. Chris and Joey probably woke up with their wakeup calls, that was usually a given. Justin would definitely need a repeat call, maybe even two or three. JC was a different story. He liked to sleep, but he would get up on the first call, depending what he was doing the previous night. Sometimes he stayed up late, working on a song, and that required a second call.
Lance reached for the phone, and dialed JC's room number, not once asking himself why he was doing it. He just wanted to make sure he was up, he told himself. Lance closed his eyes and shook his head, yeah, you keep believing that.
“Hello Lance,” JC's voice came though the line, unusually chipper.
Lance smiled, “How'd you know it was me?” he asked.
“Who else would be calling me?” JC said, “I mean, besides the wake up call machine.”
Lance laughed, “Just wanted to make sure you were up,” he said.
“Yep, been up for about an hour now.”
“Really? What's the occasion?” Lance kept JC on the phone. Just tell him you ordered breakfast and let him go!
JC sighed, “I don't know, I think it's mainly cause I forgot to close the curtains last night. Hey, did you know the sun is really bright?”
Lance laughed at JC's admission, “Yeah, it usually is.”
“Well, now that I know you're up, I'll be down in a bit,” he paused, “you did remember the cereal this time, right?”
“Okay, JC, that was one time, like last year, let it go!” Lance smiled into the phone. He had forgotten to order cereal one morning. Boy, Justin was pissed. He was so miserable all day, Chris had finally made the limo driver pull over at four o'clock in the afternoon and buy cereal at the nearest grocery store.
“Hey, I got to remind you about your faults, Lance, we don't see them too often.”
Lance's heart skipped a beat at JC's words. Calm down, he told himself, he didn't mean anything other than what he said.
“Yeah, right,” he replied. “Hey, I've got to call Justin yet, so let me go.”
“Don't bother,” JC replied, “I'll wake him up on my way to your room.”
Lance could practically hear the evil in JC's voice, “What are you planning?”
JC laughed, “Nothing much. I've just been up for an hour with nothing to do, so I made a list of ways to wake up Justin. See ya!” He waited for Lance to say goodbye and hung up the phone.
Lance stared at the phone after he hung it up. He was already in a better mood, and all he did was talk to JC. He closed his eyes, this was not good. He needed to hide his feelings. The whole world could not know about his little crush.
Forget the world, you only have four guys to worry about.
