![]() "All right Lou," Chris Kirkpatrick said into his phone. "I'll get back to you." He hung up. Lance hovered behind him, wings flapping softly. He dropped to the ground and his wings disappeared. He was clothed all in white. "What am I gonna do?" Chris asked himself softly. Lance smiled and walked up behind him, putting a comforting hand on his shoulder. Chris took a deep breath and his mind cleared. "Okay. First I need to call a couple of people..." he picked up the phone and started dialing.
Lance grinned, his work completed for the moment, and faded out. He reappeared in Justin Timberlake's living room. He grinned again as he saw the kid, who couldn't have been more than fourteen or fifteen, whining to his mother.
"But mom, there's nothing to do since they've cancelled the show and JC went back to Maryland!"
"Honey, there's still school," she replied, ignoring Justin's grumbling.
"But now, I have to go shopping. Would you like to come with me?"
"Ye..." Lance ran over and quickly placed a hand on Justin's head.
"Naw...I don't wanna...maybe I'll just play ball or something," he said.
"All right sweetie. I'll be back soon."
"Bye Ma," he said. "Why did I say no?" he asked himself.
Lance grinned. "Cause I wanted you too," he said to Justin, knowing the boy couldn't see him.
But he was mistaken. "Did I just hear something?" Justin asked himself. He shook his head. "Okay, now I'm just going crazy." He shook his head again and grabbing his basketball, went outside.
"That was close," Lance said to himself. Then, realizing he had to get back to Chris, he disappeard again.
Chris was still talking on the phone. "Timberlake, yeah, I've heard the name...thanks a lot, man, bye," Chris hung up the phone, an expression of disbelief on his face. "That's the third time someone's said that kid's name," Chris said to himself. "One more call..." Lance listened closely. Chris talked for a while. "You know anything about a kid named Justin Timberlake?" He listened. "You do? Great...what's he...oh I should? Hm...Yeah, a lot of people have told me that...you really think so?" There was another pause. Lance thought about listening to both sides of the conversation, but decided against it. "Fourteen?!? How do I know that his voice isn't gonna change?---Well I'm different!" he said indignantly. Lance giggled. Chris did have a higher than normal voice, certainly higher than Lance's own bass. "Yeah..No, I didn't watch the Mickey Mouse Club, thank you! I'm twenty-three, not twelve." He paused again. "Yeah, I'll give him a shot, what's the number?" He wrote it down. "Thanks a lot." He hung up again. "Now if I can only remember what that kid looked like..."
Lance sighed. "Now I'm workin'."
He walked over got Chris and put a hand on his shoulder. Chris thought back to all the auditions he'd been at, then remembered the smallish kid with a mop top. "HIM! Now I remember...yeah, he was pretty good." He looked down at the paper and dialed the number.
Now Lance had a dilemma. "Do I stay here or go there...I'll go over there and listen to both ends," he finally decided. He disappeared, just as Chris finished dialing.
The phone was ringing in the Harliss residance. Justin ran inside.
"Hello?" he asked, a little breathless.
"Hi, may I speak to Justin Timberlake?" Lance heard Chris ask.
"That's me," Justin said a little uncertainly.
"Hey, my name is Chris Kirkpatrick, we had some auditions together?" he asked.
"Oh yeah, I remember you...kinda..." Justin said.
"Cool. Anyways, I know that you're into singing, right?"
"Yeah," Justin said, not really sure where this was going.
"Okay, that's great. See, I had this idea, and there's this guy named Lou..." Chris explained everything, about how Lou was going to give them a contract if they could get a group together. Lance got a big grin on his face as Justin's eyes grew wider with everything Chris said. "So what do you say?" Chris asked when he finished.
"Wow!" Justin said, in awe. "That's like, my dream come true...but I have to talk to my mom about it," he admitted.
Lance could almost see Chris grin. "All right...just give me a call, kay?"
"'Course!" And the two hung up. Justin thought about going back outside to play basketball again, but he was too wired. Lance flew back up to his cloud so he could wait for Justin's mother to return.
"Good job, James," Nikolas said when he returned.
"Thanks sir," Lance said. "And it's Lance."
"Right. James." Lance sighed. "But anyway, soon you will have to bring in Joseph and Joshua. And remember, they can't find out who you are, or I'll have to replace you and the world, nor the guys, will have ever known about you. The replacement is all they will know, and their memories will be changed accordingly."
Lance nodded. "But who would you replace me with?"
"Oh, right now, it looks like Benjamin would be in line, though he wouldn't be able to sympathize with the homosexual one."
"You're right he won't!" Lance exploaded. "Benny is one of the ones that---"
"Yes, I know, James," Nikolas said calmly. "That is why we need you to be careful about what you say."
"I will," Lance sighed. "I will. I don't even know why he was allowed in," he muttered, half to himself.
"Because he atoned for his sins," Nikolas said. "God has forgivin him, why can't you?"
"I think you know why," Lance said. "I don't hate him or anything, I just haven't forgivin him. You can't really understand what he and the rest of them did."
"And they are the ones that are in Hell, James," Nikolas reminded him gently. "Benjamin is the only one of them that made it up here, and he did much to make up for his sins."
Lance sighed and nodded. He looked down and saw Joey with another girl. He smiled at his charge's seemingly simple life. Get up, go to Universal and work after school, go out, possibly to hang out with Chris after his friend was done with the Hollywood Hightones (a perfect name, in Lance's opinion), then go out with a girl. He'd gotten over Lydia surprisingly well, considering how deep his feelings had run. Then he'd sleep. Lance sighed. He missed sleep. He didn't sleep, all he did was have rest periods, although he needed a steady amount to thrive and stay completely alert. Lance shifted views to check on JC. He was fine and with his family. He shifted views again. Chris was waiting impatiently for Justin to call back. Lance grinned. Chris had a lot of energy, that he could see clearly. He checked on Joey again. Joey was kissing the girl now. Lance made a face and quickly changed the view again, to Justin. Justin was waiting impatiently for his mother to get back. The kid was practically bouncing off the walls. Lance smiled at the energy, and watched for a few more minutes. Then he saw a car pull into the driveway and Lynn Harliss came out. Time to work! He flew down, ready to begin.
