Chapter 11
"Well, it's a start," Justin said, helping JC pull all the bags from the pet store out of the van. The four men got all the stuff upstairs and threw it into a corner of JC's room.
"So now we've got him food and toys. I'll make the appointment for his shots and stuff tomorrow," JC said, shutting the door to his room with a sigh and letting Lance off his leash. Joey, Justin and Chris all fell in various places around the room. JC grabbed a dish from one of the bags and a can of food from another. Lance mrowed his appreciation as JC put the food down on the floor beside the bed as Lance started to eat.
"I still..."
"Chris, shut up." JC sat down on his bed and Lance wandered over after finishing his meal.
"Yeah, shut up," Lance said, yawning. Nestling his nose into the fur on his stomach, he lay in JC's lap, curled into a little ball. JC was absently patting him, and Lance was purring.
"He sure seems happy," Joey commented, gazing at the beige-and-white cat. JC glanced down and smiled a little.
"He sounds it, doesn't he?"
"He's a nice color," Justin offered.
"I'm gorgeous and you know it," Lance said, purring. JC laughed.
"I think he's telling you he's better-looking than you are."
"Hey! Upstaged by a CAT."
"Damn right," Lance muttered. JC laughed again.
"I like this cat," Joey chimed in. "He can talk louder than Chris!"
"HEY!" Chris yelled as everyone--including Lance--laughed at him. Then Justin yawned and got up.
"I'm going to bed," he informed the others. "Chris, you coming?"
"Yeah, yeah. JC, I still think that cat needs his balls cut off."
"I've said it before, Christopher... I'll cut YOUR balls off," Lance shot back, baring his teeth and hissing a little. Chris quickly fled the room and ran after Justin. JC looked over at Joey and sighed.
"What's up, Joe-Joe?"
"Aren't you worried about Lance?" Joey burst out. "I mean, he's fucking MISSING."
"I'm right here!" Lance protested.
"Scoop, hush," JC ordered and Lance curled up again, pouting. "And I'm scared shitless for Lance, but what can we do? We have no idea where he is and Johnny will KILL me if he finds out I let Lance go off with some strange woman. A *Voodoo Queen* at that!"
"Tell me again why you went to see this woman?"
"Because I wanted my fortune read, what's the big deal?"
"Does Voodoo involve real magic?"
"I don't know. Why?"
"Did she like, turn him into a toad or something?"
"JOEY! Magic can't do that!" JC yelled. "There's no such thing as magic."
"If only you knew, Josh," Lance thought to himself. "If only you believed Joey!"
"I'm just suggesting, JC," Joey defended himself.
"I know, and I'm sorry. I'm just really scared for Lance right now. What if she's some homicidal maniac and has killed him and fed his body to the alligators?"
"Joshua Chasez, you are *morbid*!" Joey scolded. "Don't think like that. Lance is fine, I'm sure of it."
"I'm right here," Lance said sleepily, feeling his eyes close. Seconds later, he was fast asleep, curled up on JC's bed while JC and Joey continued talking.
"Remind me in the morning to call the vet about his shots. I don't want him getting sick on me so soon after getting him."
"Will do," Joey promised. "Are you going to... you know."
"Not right now," JC said. "He doesn't need it-- it's the middle of winter and mating season isn't until the spring."
"I'm off to bed now."
"Night, Joey."
"Night, JC. Night Scoop." And then Joey, too, was gone. JC looked at his new pet and smiled gently.
"I think we're going to have fun together. Goodnight, Scoop." JC changed clothes and gently climbed into the bed, trying not to disturb the cat. After a few minutes of listening to Scoop's soothing purring, JC fell into a dreamless sleep.
